Tremp, the capital of Pallars Jussà, is a territorially complex municipality, both in terms of geography and its extensive area, exceeding 303 km², making it the largest municipality in Catalonia. Its extension is similar or greater than some Catalan regions, such as Pla de l’Estany or Pla d’Urgell. The city of Tremp, with 5,991 inhabitants, located in the northwestern area of Catalonia, at 470 meters above sea level, becomes the gateway to the Pyrenees and a commercial and service center.
Geographically, the municipality is situated in the midst of the limestone Pre-Pyrenees, between the so-called interior mountain ranges, Sant Gervàs and Carreu, and the exterior, Montsec. It occupies a good part of the right bank of the Noguera Pallaresa and the left bank of the Noguera Ribagorçana, amidst a mountain landscape of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. The urban nucleus is located in a wide basin flanked by the Sant Antoni and Terradets reservoirs. Within this extensive territory, there are around thirty nuclei of varying sizes. On one hand, we find Tremp, which concentrates more than 90% of the population; then, the nuclei located near communication axes maintain a certain population, around 100 inhabitants; and, thirdly, there are about twenty nuclei located on the verge of depopulation.
As the capital of the region, Tremp provides a range of health, educational, administrative, recreational, and sports services, which are highly regarded given the city’s influence in the two Pallars, Alta Ribagorça, and Vall d’Aran, primarily. However, Tremp still maintains a marked agrarian character and plays, from this point of view, a symbiotic role with the rest of the region: Tremp, with few farmers, assumes the role of a commercial and service center for a vast territory dominated by primary activities. Even today, a substantial part of its economy is oriented towards providing personal and professional services to farmers in other municipalities. The regional capital is where farmers and ranchers procure products for their operations and carry out daily purchases, financial transactions, and professional dealings. It is also where some of the most important agricultural cooperative centers in the region have developed.
Agricultural production focuses on crops and Mediterranean activities, rather than typically mountainous ones. The most representative crops include cereals, fodder, almond trees, olive trees, and the revival of vineyards and wine production, which has gained strong prominence in the last decade, becoming an economic and territorial prestige engine in the Conca de Tremp.
The Cordevi Festival is organized (https://festivalcordevi.cat/), the gastronomic festival of Pallars with KM 0 menus, gastronomic experiences, live music, and visits to producers.
